JohannesburgThe continent’s business capital, and where African delegates can actually get to
Sandton and Gallagher give you real convention capacity, and OR Tambo is the one African hub with the intra-African network to fill it.
The honest version
If the audience is pan-African, Johannesburg is usually the only answer that works. OR Tambo carries more intra-African traffic than anywhere else on the continent, which means delegates from Lagos, Nairobi, Accra and Kinshasa can reach you in a day rather than two. Sandton Convention Centre sits inside the business district with the hotels attached, and Gallagher handles exhibition floor.
Two operational realities shape every programme here and neither is negotiable. Power is not guaranteed, so generator capacity and switchover time belong in the venue contract rather than the assumptions. And duty of care needs a real briefing rather than a paragraph — delegates who behave the way they would in Frankfurt will have a bad week.
Best suited to
- Pan-African conferences and association meetings
- Mining, energy and infrastructure events
- Financial services and telecoms conventions
- Exhibitions targeting the sub-Saharan market

Operating notes
What actually decides whether Johannesburg works for you.
Airlift, hotel capacity, ground and season — in that order, and before anyone falls in love with a photograph.
Access and airlift
OR Tambo (JNB) is the continent’s primary hub, with strong intra-African coverage plus long-haul to Europe, the Gulf and Asia. Lanseria (HLA) handles private and regional traffic. Cape Town is a two-hour domestic hop for programme extensions.
Hotels and capacity
Deep and good value in international terms, concentrated in Sandton within walking distance of the convention centre — which solves most of the movement problem before it starts.
Ground and distance
Gautrain links the airport to Sandton reliably in about fifteen minutes. Beyond that, plan private transfers rather than delegates finding their own way.
Season and calendar
March to May and September to November. Summer, from November to February, brings sharp afternoon thunderstorms that matter for any outdoor content.
