Two cities, side by side, on the things that actually decide it.
Not weather and photographs. Airlift for your delegate origins, hotel capacity under one roof, transfer times at the real arrival hour, the season, and the local calendar constraint nobody mentions until you have signed.

Access and airlift
Munich Airport (MUC) is a Lufthansa hub with strong long-haul and dense European coverage. S-Bahn reaches the Messe directly; ICE rail links the rest of Germany and Austria.
Humberto Delgado (LIS) has strong European coverage plus Americas and Africa links; the airport is unusually close to the city.
Hotels
Good quality and generally reliable, except during the big fairs and Oktoberfest, when the city sells out and rates go somewhere else entirely.
Good quality and value, but capacity is the constraint in peak weeks.
Ground
Excellent public transport, and the Messe has its own S-Bahn stations. Coach access and freight routing at the Messe are properly organised.
Short transfers and an easy city to move around. Hills and narrow old-town streets restrict coach access in places.
Season
March to July and September to November. Avoid Oktoberfest — roughly mid-September to early October — unless the event is about Oktoberfest.
April to June and September to October are best. Major congress weeks remove hotel availability entirely.
Fit, venues and constraints
Best for
- Industrial and manufacturing trade fairs
- Automotive and mobility programmes
- Technical congresses and conventions
- Alpine incentive extensions
- Association and scientific congresses
- Technology conferences
- Incentive programmes and offsites
- European sales and partner meetings
Principal venues
- Messe München
- ICM — International Congress Center München
- BMW Welt
- Olympiahalle and Olympic Park
- Residenz München
- Postpalast and Zenith
- Centro de Congressos de Lisboa
- FIL — Feira Internacional de Lisboa
- Altice Arena
- Estoril Congress Center
- Palácio and quinta venues in Sintra and Cascais
Watch out for
- Oktoberfest removes the city’s hotel inventory for two weeks
- Late changes are expensive and sometimes not permitted
- Labour, noise and works council rules are enforced strictly
- Major fairs dictate city-wide rates eighteen months ahead
- Hotel capacity is the binding constraint — book blocks very early
- Old-town venues have real access and load-in limits
- Peak-week rates rise steeply
- Estoril and Cascais add transfer time that is easy to underestimate

Airlift and visa position for your actual nationalities usually settles it in a day. Send the audience breakdown and the date window and we will come back with a recommendation and the reasoning.
