Two cities, side by side, on the things that actually decide it.

Not weather and photographs. Airlift for your delegate origins, hotel capacity under one roof, transfer times at the real arrival hour, the season, and the local calendar constraint nobody mentions until you have signed.

Bangkok Large venues, deep hotel inventory and a cost base that lets a big programme stay ambitious.

Lisbon Congress capacity, good value by western European standards, and a city that flatters a programme.

Operating notes

Access and airlift

Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is a major hub with strong Asian, European and Gulf connections; Don Mueang (DMK) serves regional low-cost traffic. Visa-free entry for many nationalities.

Lisbon

Humberto Delgado (LIS) has strong European coverage plus Americas and Africa links; the airport is unusually close to the city.

Hotels

Bangkok

Very deep across every category, with excellent value at the top end and genuine capacity for large blocks.

Lisbon

Good quality and value, but capacity is the constraint in peak weeks.

Ground

Bangkok

Traffic is the planning problem. Skytrain and MRT work well for smaller groups; coach movements need real time allowances and a route briefing.

Lisbon

Short transfers and an easy city to move around. Hills and narrow old-town streets restrict coach access in places.

Season

Bangkok

November to February is cool and dry and books early. The rainy season is manageable for indoor programmes. Songkran in April closes much of the city.

Lisbon

April to June and September to October are best. Major congress weeks remove hotel availability entirely.

Fit, venues and constraints

Best for

Bangkok
  • Large conferences and conventions
  • Incentive programmes and achiever trips
  • Regional dealer and distributor meets
  • Trade exhibitions with an ASEAN audience
Lisbon
  • Association and scientific congresses
  • Technology conferences
  • Incentive programmes and offsites
  • European sales and partner meetings

Principal venues

Bangkok
  • Queen Sirikit National Convention Center
  • IMPACT Muang Thong Thani
  • Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre
  • ICONSIAM
  • Riverside and Sukhumvit hotel ballrooms
Lisbon
  • Centro de Congressos de Lisboa
  • FIL — Feira Internacional de Lisboa
  • Altice Arena
  • Estoril Congress Center
  • Palácio and quinta venues in Sintra and Cascais

Watch out for

Bangkok
  • Transfer times double in peak traffic — plan by clock, not by distance
  • Songkran and major Buddhist holidays affect supplier availability
  • Air quality can be poor in the first months of the year
  • Outdoor evening events need a covered fallback in the rainy season
Lisbon
  • Hotel capacity is the binding constraint — book blocks very early
  • Old-town venues have real access and load-in limits
  • Peak-week rates rise steeply
  • Estoril and Cascais add transfer time that is easy to underestimate
